Brief History
of Beypazari
Beypazari is a cultural and economic center which is only 100 km
far to the capital of Turkey. Through its history, it was dominated
by Hittite Empire, Phrygia, Galatia, Roman
Empire and Byzantines in the first ages and later by Seljuk Empire
and Ottoman Empire...
The first name of Beypazari was Lagania which means "the country
settled on rocky mountains" in Luwish. Luwi civilization is
the one that ruled before Hittites. This information proves that
Beypazari has a 3500 years old history. It is predicted that some
treasury of the first civilizations lived in Inozu region is in
Beypazarı.
Lagania name changed after the 6th century, because dominance of
Roman Empire started to appear in Lagania. In Roman times
Beypazarı was a center of episcopacy so Roman Emperor Anastasios
visited Lagania. After this date, new name of the city was
Lagania-Anastasiapolis (Anastasios's city - Lagania).
When the Turks came to Lagania-Anastasiapolis? Turks
reached Anatolia region in 1071 thanks to Malazgirt Victory.
Lagania-Anastasiapolis was conquered in almost 1075 and after... In
Seljuq and Ottoman times, the city was on a important historical
route which connects Istanbul to Ankara and then to Baghdad. This
route is called as Silk Road in the history and it originally
connects China to Europe and Silk Road was used for commercial
reasons. In conclusion Turks gave "Beypazari" name to this important
city. "Bey" means lord, master, gentleman, ruler and "pazar" means
marketplace. Beypazari means Marketplace of the Lord...
